news propagation business

The news propagation business captures and formats news reports on behalf of end-user businesses (such as newspaper publishers).

news propagation value-chain

The news propagation value-chain is the set of steps (capturing, editing and casting) that takes a news report through from its source (some news event) to its end-user (for instance a newspaper publisher)

news propagation organisation

The news propagation organisation is the way the news propagation business is organised into companies and into divisions (and departments) within companies.

news propagation process

The news propagation process is the set of roles (provided by humans and tools) and interactions between roles required to realise the value-chain of the news propagation business.

agency

An agency is one company operating within the news propagation business, for instance the Reuters agency.

bureau

A bureau is one division of an agency. The agency has a main bureau which deals with news that is location independent. The other bureaux are sited in particular locations (for instance the Washington bureau, the London bureau, and the South American bureau) and specialise in news and customers connected with those locations.

service

A bureau provides a number of services. These might for instance include English service, Arabic service, European service, regional service, basic service and radio service. The basic service employs most of the news processing staff and processes the complete range of news. The Arabic services tailors news output for Arabic speaking communities. The radio service creates and distributes news in audio format.

desk

A service contains a number of news editing departments or desks specialising in different types of news, for instance desks for economy, sport, domestic, foreign, features, regional, culture and politics. It might also have county and local desks (consisting perhaps of one individual each) sited at particular locations in a country.

source

A source component generates a news event that is reported on by the news propagation business. Its composition (in terms of lower level components) is shown below.

capturing

A capturing component is responsible for the initial capture of a news event in a form that can be processed by the news propagation business. Its composition (in terms of lower level components) is shown below.

Notation: Note that this diagram shows reporter-i as interacting with all raw news packages. In fact it would only interact with the ones (dynamically) allocated to it by event control. Such dynamic configuration of components cannot be represented in the version of POSD used here.

editing

An editing component is responsible for combining and transforming the material collected by the capturing component. It may also make use of previously published material (generated by other editing or casting components). Its overall aim is to prepare material for publishing by the casting departments. Its composition (in terms of lower level components) is shown below.

casting

A casting component is responsible for tailoring news output to a particular type of customer. For instance one casting department broadcasts to its subscribers (via email, fax, or mail shots) summaries of all news items, another selects news reports of interest to particular industrial or commercial companies, whilst a third provides news reports required for a particular publication. The composition of the casting component (in terms of lower level components) is shown below.

end-user

The end user is the organisation requiring news from a news agency. This might for instance be a newspaper publisher or an industrial or commercial company. Its composition (in terms of lower level components) is shown below.
