Description of family of Walter son of Joseph and brother of Frederick Joseph from granddaughter Chris Burnet - My family moved to Downham, which is a stone's throw away from Bromley in the '50's and then to Bellingham, near Lewisham later on in the late 50's. Dad was an auxiliary fireman at Lambeth on the fireboats during the war. Then continued fulltime after the war. I remember well the flat the Pinners lived in in Park Buildings in Rotherhithe, some of the brothers worked on the docks. Bill in particular was a huge man the original gentle giant, no fat just muscle. Ada, Bill and Harry (always in that order) lived together in a council flat in Bermondsey also in their adult years, all three remained single. Ada was a Land Girl during the war. Arthur was the handsome one and the youngest. Walter (Wally my father) Stan, Dennis, and Jack were all ginger haired and the red face that goes with it, all looked alike, the rest were black haired. Harry was a character as were all the boys, after spending too much time in the pub one night, left his car in the middle of Tower Bridge, in the morning when he finally surfaced, he went to retrieve it only to find the bridge had opened and his car had rolled down the bridge and was waiting for him at the bottom. My grandparents on my mother's side also lived in Park Buildings for a while as did me and my family. My mother always remembered the day the first buzz bomb sailed by her window during the war. My father and his brothers used to swim in the Thames as boys as it was still clean then. As you mentioned the Pinners' were poor. My father's only suit was pawned so he couldn't go out and meet my mother on a date. And sometimes they couldn't go to school as the shoes had been pawned. Dad wanted to be a teacher but there was no money for further education. Later on the grandparents on my mother's side moved to Shaftesbury near Salisbury, Dorset. - My father was stationed at Lambeth on the Thames, and as well as fire engines, they manned the fire boats. I can remember my dad letting have a ride on the fire engine and letting me ring the fire bell which was done by hand in those days
