Ref: PRO 1305 Thomas de Wesenham recorded at Oxford as a juror of a trial of theft from a church (transcript only, original destroyed by fire) 1331 John Wesenham, Incumbent of St Mary & St Martin, Kirton, Suffolk 1332 Ralph de Wesingham, An Index to the 1332 Lay Subsidy Rolls for Lincolnshire 1330s-1382c Sir John de Wesenham merchant of Lynn, mayor, alderman "New Man" John is one of the top five most powerful merchants in England, he is granted exemptions by the Crown from the strict laws banning exports of grain. This merchant class gained influence at court as a source of money to fund wars on the Continent. 1347 16th June. A grain ship owned by John de Wesenham was plundered by food rioters in Lynn. One of a series of food riots in ports around England, the grain was stripped from the ship and re-sold at low prices to the locals. The grain was to be shipped to Gascony, the ship due to return with wine for the King. Such large grain exports often caused hardship to the local area especially in time of bad harvests. Agnes was later buried in St Margaret’s church, Westminster on the south side of the alter. [Wesenham claimed to have been farming this since 1395/96 (for 33s.4d); at the time of this claim, in 1419, he was 7 years in arrears of payment of the farm. Because of money owed him by the corporation, it pardoned him the arrears and reduced his farm to 26s.8d.] 1420 Mary Wessenham marries Thomas Billing in IGI 1420 John de Wesenham(II), steps down as Mayor of Lynn on Michaelmas day in the Guildhall 1426 John Weasenham took over farm of hermatage outside East Gate, Lynn 1428 Rents of assize: The 1376/77 chamberlains' account refers to 2s received from the farm of a garden next to the hermitage outside the East Gate of Lynn (it lay to the east of Rondeshill). In 1424 Jobard was still tenant, at the same rent, of what was described as a hermitage or chapel with garden. John Wesenham took over the farm of the hermitage (for 6s.8d) in 1428. 1434 John de Wesenham (II): “Johann Wesenam”, London receives the German Order from the Hanseatic (Hansa) League with 7 other London traders. Awarded to traders who have reached a venerable old age. Literal translation: “Certification of the old people and the common buyer of the German Hansa in London in things Gerd”. The Hansa League was a trading group in North Germany, and the surrounding Baltic towns with a protected trade network free from interference from local princes. Robert de Wesenhams elder brother Thomas had made a Will settling Conington Manor on Thomas Cotton, son of Mary and William, and the manor remained in the Cotton family until 1752 when Sir John Cotton died without male issue. Weasenham was killed when he fell from a fourth story window at his home, 49 Gellatly Street, Dundee on Sataurday. Age 53, he was an assistant in Dundee weights and measures department. He had suffered from heart trouble and had been off work for a week. As a young man Mr Weasenham was a footballer. he played for Montrose at outside right, and during the last war took prominant part in army football in Malta, where he served for three years. He is survived by Mrs Weasenham, and a married daughter. This is the second loss the family has sustained recently. Six weeks ago a daughter died after a prolonged illness."
